Great Western Runners Club Championship 2025 – 6‑Race Series Report
The inaugural Great Western Runners Club Championship was launched in 2025 with a clear goal — to see more blue tops at local races and to support the fantastic local clubs that help make our Towpath Series possible. The championship featured six races across the region, each offering a unique challenge and a chance to earn points for the overall standings.
Scoring was simple: your GWR finishing position equalled the number of points you scored, meaning the lowest total (or average) across your best races determined the winner. To qualify for the championship, runners needed to complete at least four of the six races – rewarding consistency, commitment, and club spirit throughout the season.
Race 1 – Sri Chinmoy 10K, Eastville Park
The series began under bright spring skies at Eastville Park. The flat, fast course gave runners a chance to set early benchmarks, and the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation.
Highlights: A strong turnout from both new and seasoned members, with Will Purcell and Katy Sutcliffe taking early wins to set the tone for the championship.
Race 2 – Blaise Blazer
The second race swapped tarmac for trails, winding through Blaise Castle Estate’s woodland paths and steep climbs.
Highlights: Mud, laughter, and plenty of hill‑grit. Kelly Dicks and John Cox showed consistency, keeping pressure on the leaders as the series began to take shape.
Race 3 – Nailsea Beer & Banger 10K
A summer evening classic — fast racing followed by sausages and smiles.
Highlights: Excellent club camaraderie and post‑race celebrations. James Healey delivered a strong run to stay in podium contention, while Alice Doggrell continued her steady climb up the women’s leaderboard.
Race 4 – Chepstow 10K
Crossing the Severn brought a scenic challenge with rolling roads and river views.
Highlights: A competitive field and perfect running conditions. Will Purcell maintained his unbeaten streak, and Katy Sutcliffe extended her lead with another top finish.
Race 5 – Wotton 10K
Cooler September weather made for ideal racing through the picturesque Wotton countryside, including the stretch past Sir David McMurtry House, co‑founder of Renishaw PLC.
Highlights: A mix of trail and road kept runners honest. John Hargreaves secured valuable points, and Nadia Kottegoda impressed with a strong finish.
Race 6 – Five Arches parkrun
The finale brought the club together for a friendly yet fiercely contested parkrun morning. Ten athletes lined up to maximise their scores and end the season on a high.
Highlights: Smiles, sprint finishes, and a fitting end to the championship. Katy Sutcliffe and Will Purcell sealed their perfect records — four wins each — to become 2025 Club Champions.
