Postgraduate Research:

Ross Lorimer, a postgraduate researcher at Edinburgh University, is researching how the context and culture of a sport influences the anxiety experienced during competition by athletes.

His research has now moved on to its second stage, and he now wishes to look at a narrower sample of male middle to long distance runners, preferable aged between 16 and 40, although older subjects are welcome. It is his hope that you can once again aid him, by suitable athletes completing anonymous questionnaires.

If you wish help, by completing an electronic version of the questionnaire, click the following link: http://www.gjsep.com/questionnaire.htm

BBC Radio - Bristol to Bath Cycle Track:

Fiona Lamdin from Points West is doing an article on the safety of using the Bristol-Bath cycle path for running and cycling. She has asked if there are any members of GWR who have had unpleasant experiences who would be willing to speak to her (anonymously if preferred.)

She is asking anybody who has been assaulted (whether reported or not) to drop her an Email fiona.lamdin@bbc.co.uk or call her mobile 07879405026.

Men in White for Channel 4:

I’m working on a brand new Channel 4 science series and I wondered if you might be able to help as we are looking for a runner to take part in one of our programmes. The series is called Men in White and in it three young scientists answer pleas from real people who have everyday problems which they need help with. The scientists then invent something to solve the problem and test it out. The series will be aired in the prime time Sunday teatime slot on Channel 4.
A problem has been suggested to us which we really like – it’s from a runner who is often approached by boisterous dogs when jogging. He wants our presenters to find a way to deter any dogs (without harming them) so that he can run in peace! He feels a bit too shy to be on the TV but it’s something we’d really like to solve and so we are looking for a runner who has the same problem. I wondered if it would be possible for you to send a message out to all the running groups you are in contact with and/or post a message on your website? We would be really grateful for your help. Please let me know if this would be possible and I’ll send you short paragraph to send around.
Many thanks in advance.

I am a Sport and Exercise Science student studying the effect of long distance running on bone density and mineral content. I am looking for male participants age 50 and over with a long history of distance running, who are either still competing or have ceased training at least a year ago.

Participants are required to attend a single session in the Cardiff area between February and March. This would involve a questionnaire, a small blood test for hormone levels and a DEXA scan. DEXA (dual emission x-ray absorptiometry) is a test that measures the density of bones using low energy x-rays (the dose of radiation used is less than a normal x-ray test). Participants may be interested in their results and any results out of the normal range will be sent to their general practitioners.

Attached to this email is a repeat of the details and a questionnaire to assess the eligibility of those interested. All the information provided will be treated confidentially. If you have any questions please contact me: 07733488176, TurnerSJ@cardiff.ac.uk
