Heading South

For those who regularly run abroad and keep abreast of the international scene, you will probably have already read your copy of the ‘La Prensa Austral’, Punta Arenas,14th April, 2003 and found a familiar name in the sports section:

It reads:

'Special prizes

In addition to the winners in both categories, special awards were handed out to María Inés Padilla, the only woman competitor and to Simon Richards, a British citizen who happened to be passing and decided to participate after being invited to join the race.’

The 8 km race was organised by Chilean Forces for competitors from air, sea, ground, special (and other such army/police types) forces. The race was divided into 2 categories: the under 35s and those aged 35 and over leaving 15 minutes later on the same course.

Rumour has it that SVR did rather well but that's a story for him to tell.

The question must now be asked: Has anyone raced further South? Who has run the furthest north? Grab your atlas and send your answers on a postcard to the Editor at Footnotes.
