Footnotes -  February 2003

Avon and Somerset Cross-Country Championships

Purdown, Bristol, 5th January 2003

From the Start:

There was an excellent entry for the meeting, but sadly on the day only about half to two-thirds actually turned up. However, they were all keen to run and all races started promptly with no problems.

To the Finish:

Many thanks to the hard-working team at the Finish area. Paul "Marshalled" the runners into the correct funnels where Rita and Pat very efficiently recorded all the numbers and Hilary gave out the medals to the winners on the spot. (It was a good idea to do it then).

Timekeeping: unfortunately a promised timekeeper from another club failed to materialise, but the day was saved by one John from Swindon, who was able to record all the female times manually whilst I used the GWR watch and printer for the male races. Steve and Simon did a very good job by recording "spot times" for all the races and I hope they enjoyed seeing the other side of a meeting.

The weather could not have been better and we had the added entertainment of the Police helicopter plus a large number of policemen hunting a fugitive in the adjoining woods. How did you arrange that Peter?

Once again you have proved the motto "Great Western Runners run a great race".

Avon & Somerset XC Champs - 2

The above event went off very smoothly on the big day and feedback has been very positive from all directions.

I would just like to thank everyone who helped to make it all happen, whatever job or jobs you were doing, your assistance was much appreciated.

Also, a special mention to those people who filled key roles both onthe day and beforehand. Mike Willcox for managing the course set-up, Nigel Barker for dealing with late entries and results as well as advising me how to negotiate the bureaucracy involved in putting the event on, Mike Bull for casting a fine eye for detail over arrangements so that nothing slipped through the net. At the start and finish to Mike West, Ray and Pam Gooding for keeping everything on schedule and in order the start and finish. Finally, to Sally Burton for putting up with the insertion of this mammoth task into an already busy domestic scene!!
