British Fell Running Relays, Sat. 13th Oct 2007

A recently initiated competition (2005), this is has become a very popular event and hotly contested by all the top fell clubs oop North. Softie southerners’ clubs are starting to enter teams – last year Stroud managed 35th place with a couple of ‘ringers’. With all the hard-won off-road experience of those Gwent and Glos. league XC (how could any race be a greater challenge than Plock Court?!), could GWR field a team to challenge them, and all they feckless dilettante northerners?

Whilst competitive at the sharp end, this looks like it could be a fun day out on the fells for all. So the call goes out.

The 2007 event will be in the Forest of Bowland, Lancs. (SD601441)

The four legs need six runners in total:

Leg 1 (solo) – 4.7m 1,800',
Leg 2 (pairs) – 7m 2,700',
Leg 3 (pairs/navigation) –approximately 7 miles 2,000',
Leg 4 (solo) – 4m 1,900'

Entry forms will be out with the June edition of Fell Runner Magazine, and prompt response will be needed to ensure a place.

So, expressions of interest now required – by email martin.longhurst@uwe.ac.uk or sign the sheet on the board at BLTSC

In the almost certain event of this offer being heavily over-subscribed, I suggest team selection (or taster, for novice fell runners?) could be held at the more local “Fan” fell race weekend in the Brecon Beacons on 21st/22nd July (with possible camping/beverage libation at Talybont?). These races are:

SAT. 21st JULY. PEN Y FAN. 11:00. 3.5m/1700’
SUN. 22nd JULY. FAN Y BIG. 14:00. 10.1m/2200’
